Alsace France's third most important wine making region ( after Bordeaux and Burgundy ) has been producing wine uninterruptedly since about the year 300 AD. These days, the region makes almost exclusively white wines.
The magic of Alsace is to be found in its hillside vineyards,
in its pretty villages of half-timbered houses, Renaissance facades,
châteaux which preside over the silence... 120 km of sheer charm.
Taste the Sylvaner wine. Riesling, the most popular wine, is the
perfect accompaniment to sauerkraut. Don't forget to
taste Gewurztraminer with its marvellous
bouquet, the Tokay from Hungary,
the Chasselas Blanc served in typical pitchers with their blue designs.
The journey begins at the Gothic collegiate church of Thann...
The Route du Vin can be easily visited by car but it's also
possible to explore the area on bycicle or by hopping on and off local
buses.
