History of the Luberon

The Luberon has been occupied since prehistoric times with vestiges from 2000 BC to be seen in the museums. At the end of the Bronze Age the Ligurians and Celts occupied fortified sites and "oppidum" whih were the origin of medieval castles.

At the end of the 2nd century BC the Romans came and constructed marvels among which remain the Pont Julien near Bonnieux and remains of towns near St Remy and Vaison la Romaine.

The Middle Ages were marked by Christianization and the construction of churches, monasteries, convents and priories. Around 1430 a difficult period begin which included plague and religious wars which decimatd the area.

During the XIX century the place began to reawaken and there was an expansion of agriculture and small industry.

After World War II, many artists and writers were drawn to the area by its beauty and formed the beginning of an international community which continues to grow.

Because of the ease of air and rail connections, it has become possible for businessmen to make their base here rather than in metropolitan areas, thus affording themselves and their families a superior quality of life.

There is a rich cultural life with major music and drama festivals held each summer. In each village there are chamber music groups and there is a theatre season in winter in Avignon.

Take enough time to explore the villages of the North Luberon -Gordes, Roussillon, Joucas, St Saturnin, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes, Oppede- These will start your voyage of the discovery of the area which can widen and continue for years.
