AUTUMN

In wine regions, the grape harvest is the occasion for much joy, and every wine village has its own wine festival. When the new wine is ready in November there are more festivities. When the hunting season begins, there is game shooting everywhere. In the southwest, small migrating birds are trapped in nets, often at the dismay of ecologists.


SEPTEMBER

- Festival de I'Ile de France (weekends, until mid-Oct), Classical and jazz concerts.

- Picardy Cathedral Festival (mid-Sep), classical concers in the region's cathedrals.

- "Musicades" (first two weeks), Lyon.

- Classical music concerts. Le Puy "Roi de l'Oiseau", (third week), Renaissancestyle festival.

- Grape Harvest, wine regions throughout France.

OCTOBER

- Paris Jazz Festival (concerts all month in various venues).

- Pottery-makers Festival (first weekend), Lyon.

- Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (first Sun), Horse racing at Longchamp, Paris.

- Espelette Red Pepper Festival (last weekend).

- Walnut season, throughout Périgord region.

NOVEMBER

- Dijon International Food and Wine Festival (first two weeks).

- Traditional gastronomic fair.

- Apple Festival (mid-Nov), Le Havre.

- Wine Sales and Les Trois Glorieuses (third weekend), Beaune.

- Truffle season (until Mar), Périgord, Quercy and Provence.
